Club attire

No offense ladies, but this post is going out to our male audience. You don’t need help with this topic anyway, since men go to clubs because of you, so keep looking as beautiful as you always do.

Now fellas, I hate dress codes as much as you do. I went to a catholic school for too many years when I was a youngin’, so any place requiring some sort of regulation on my swag isn’t my cup of tea. However, the clubs that enforce them is where you’re going to find all of the best music, as well as all of those short skirts. So, for the sake of a good time, it’s better to get with the program and be conscious of how to get past the doorman with absolutely no issue. I’ve devised a couple of pointers to always keep you looking your best and out of trouble.

1. Scope out the digs

Each club is unique in its own way. What’s acceptable for one may not be for another, even if it’s right around the corner. Make sure you inform yourself so avoid looking over any fine print. Something as quick as the facebook event page or club’s website can go a really long way. Knowledge is power!

2. Think ahead

While clubs are the place to be, don’t forget that you’re entering a very dark and sweaty atmosphere, especially if you’re going to the right one and it’s like a can of sardines in there. So plan accordingly. Don’t wear anything heavy, and even if there’s a coat check you really don’t want to deal with that line at the end of the night, so just avoid it altogether. A blazer or denim jackets are light enough and should keep you cool. Although this may sound backwards, avoid wearing your best wardrobe. You don’t want sweat and whisky all over that expensive outfit, do you?

3. Know your city

Wherever you club in the world, there will be rules depending on your geographical location. And the doorman knows every single one of them. So pay attention to the fashion trends of your community and act accordingly.

4. What to avoid

There are several items in your closet that you want to avoid altogether. Hoodie’s are at the top of this list. Whether it’s a zip-up, pull over, hood or no hood, it just doesn’t belong in a club. Sneakers and sandals are also never welcome, so bust out some classy kicks and avoid anything white on your feet. Sunglasses are a sweet accessory, but eating it down a flight of stairs just because you wanted to look fly isn’t worth it.

5. How to play it safe

You don’t have to be the trendiest fashionisto to pass the doorman’s judgement. There are some pieces that, if combined with proper grooming, will guarantee access every time. Dark blue denim jeans look great on any guy, so pick your fit and rock a pair. A shirt makes guys look presentable, but avoid rhinestones and bedazzling jewels (Ed Hardy is just not fucking cool). If a shirt is too much for you, try a solid color v-neck. Your footwear is more important than you think; Women pay attention to that shit. Clean and presentable kicks that go with the tone of your outfit will do wonders.

If you keep some of these pointers in mind, club attire should never be a problem for you. And if you play it right, you might notice some very wanted attention from those gorgeous ladies that wasn’t there before. Look your best and be well dressed!

I’m Givin you AciD

With the newest release off BNR Trax by DJ Pierre I find myself reveling in Acid, no, not LSD unfortunately. The birth of acid in the mid 80s was a wild time, and DJ Pierre himself is a longtime veteran to the scene. Once a former member of Phuture, who some call the very first of the official acid record now releasing brand new acid tracks 20 some years later…wow, awesome.

After many years we have seen the genre rise and fall and right now we are in the process of its re-birth once again. While more producers are taking up this acid sound and applying it to their own styles it only brings a smile to my face because…well, I love it.

Here are some of my favorite acid tracks right now along with BNR Trax newest EP “Acid Jack Da Groove”. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Buy it on Beatport.

Aphex Twin, released on Rephlex

Benny Rodrigues, released on BNR’s SUPER ACID

Siriusmo – I Love My Voice, released on BNR’s SUPER ACID

Strip Steve – The Beast, released on BNR’s SUPER ACID

Australia (Light Year + The Finger Prince) – Sydney On Acid, released on Twin Turbo

Simian Mobile Disco – Tits & Acid, released on Interscope Records

This is just a taste of what’s out there right now and I hope you guys reading feel encouraged to go out and find some more.

EVERYTIME, EVERYDAY, ANYWAY, ACID.

Creativity in drinking at it’s finest

1000 Blank White Cards

1000 Blank White Cards is a fun and relatively unknown game for the more creative game enthusiasts. The objective is simple, just end up with the most points. Sounds like any other game you have ever played right? The difference here is the fact that the rules of the game are determined as the game goes on, only defined by the cards in the deck.

Creating The Deck: Start off with about 100 blank index cards and gather a group of 4-8 people. leave 20-30 of those blank cards aside

the next 70 cards we will now make ourselves

Cards can be made to be played against

A card consists (usually) of a title, a picture and a description of its effect. the title should uniquely identify the card. The picture can be as simple as a stick figure, or as complex as the player likes. The description, or rule, is the part that affects the game. It can award or deny points, cause a player to loose a turn, drink a beer or do anything the player can think of within accepted reason.

Here are some examples to get ideas flowing:

Playing The Game:

Once you have a good amount of cards add the other blank cards back into the deck and shuffle. You are now ready to play! Each player is dealt 5 cards. Play begins with the player to the dealers left and generally goes clockwise. On your turn, draw the top card from the center deck and then play a card from your hand. Cards can be made to affect yourself, other people or the center of the table (in which case the card would affect all players and would stay in the center until nullified, discarded or removed by another card) If you find you have a blank card in your hand you may make up a new card on the spot to dynamically interact with the game. If you have no blank cards and no other card can be played in the current situation, you may draw another card and pass your turn.

Winning: When the deck is exhausted just add up all the points to find your score (and yes it can be a negative number)

Epilogue: After the game is over you will have a pile of cards. This is a good time to go through all the cards and determine which ones you will keep. Eventually after playing the game a few times your master deck will get more and more refined with better cards to play with.

Remember that the game is all about how creative you can get with the cards not about getting the most points points. Have fun with it!

OHR Minimix 017 – Chemical Jump

Chemical Jump

This is another case of blogs on blogs. Let me give you a bit of history behind this week’s minimix. For about the past 3 or 4 years, we’ve basically invested our lives into this thing we call dance music. Cut back to the early days when blogs were actually hard to find (surprise!), and a damn good one even more so. Ever since the beginning we’ve been coming to two sources in particular for just about all of our tastemaking, new discoveries, and overall musical rants and ramblings – Chemical Jump and Gotta Dance Dirty.

Check back in with 2012. Years have gone by, Chemical Jump and GDD have both been incredible pillars of support for us in helping to promote Realboy ever since the beginning, and as much as we’ve grown in the year of being OHR – these two sites have shown just how much quality really does make you shine. In a world of seemingly endless commercialism and poor production, Nate has done an amazing job of curating Chemical Jump so that it’s values are just as grounded as they were when we first started reading. It’s with these thoughts in mind that we are incredibly proud to host this week’s Minimix, carefully crafted by Chemical Jump. Please do give it a listen, share it with a friend, this may very well be the best one we’ve had to date.

Click through the Soundcloud link for more info and a track listing. Thanks again to everyone who’s supported our weekly minimix series so far, it’s an honor to work with such talented DJs!

As the hype from SXSW in Austin winds down we bring ourselves to the biggest upcoming week of the year, the WMC (Winter Music Conference). *Madeon – French-boy genius, at a mere 17 (almost 18!) this kid has made a rising entrance into the scene and has been dominating on tour as well as in the studio with his newest release of “Icarus” released on his own label Popcultr. Keep an eye out for this kid, he’s going places and has the French touch.

<3 Mehdi

Get over to The Standard to catch an afternoon show hosted in memory of DJ Mehdi whom we all love and miss.

Day 2, Saturday:

Round 2, and possibly the most exciting of the three, at least in my opinion.

*Justice – with their new live set, and their mesh from past to present we guarantee you to see one of the best live sets of the year with these two Frenchmen.

*Duck Sauce – A-trak and Armand Van Helden one of the most spectacular and upbeat duos right now, playing what I would consider some of the best French house in the scene.

*2manyDjs - WOW, that’s all I could think the last time I saw these guys in October, mind-blowing. If you could only catch one set at ULTRA I would 100% say see these guys. True masters of their craft accompanied by a thrilling voyage of album artwork to match their show.

*Digitalism – always a favorite of mine, although not accompanied by their live set I’m sure their track selection will be spectacular amongst a plethora of some originals.

Fatboy Slim

Apart from these guys, you will find me at the Annie Mac Stage for the rest of the day catching my favorite French acts from Busy  P to Gessaffelstein.

Don’t forget to grab Miami Noize before leaving!

Day 3, Sunday:

The last day of ULTRA is today and it is undoubtedly the least impressive when compared to the other two. Honestly I’d be so burnt out by today I don’t know if I’d make it out to the festival. Sunday’s lineup is filled with commercial DJ’s and it’s just not worth the headache for me after an exhausting couple of days.

For the rest of you who decide to make it out to ULTRA, good luck in your endeavors! Hope you enjoyed a wonderful few days of EDM and that OHR was able to open your eyes to some new music!

Bay Area Legend: Equipto

If we are married to EDM, then Hip-Hop is our really hot mistress. Everyone on the label appreciates all aspects of the genre, and we’re thankful to be based in California, one of its breeding grounds.

Equipto
That’s why I’m really excited to see one of the Bay Area’s very own legends, The Heart And Soul Of San Francisco Hip Hop, Equipto. At Mezzanine. Tomorrow. Equipto has been holding down the Bay Area Scene for over fifteen years, releasing multiple hits including Also, Horns And Halos And The Red X Tapes With Opio Of The Hieroglyphics as well as Profound, and working with numerous artists, including Bay Area legends Andre Nickatina, Mac Dre and Z-Man. He is the CEO of his own label, Solidarity Records, and his passion and determination for his hometown scene have made him a local legend in the Hip-Hop community.

He’s decided to celebrate his birthday by performing some of his very best and he’s bringing a few friends to toast the night away with him; J.Diggs, Souls of Mischief, and Berner will be alongside the master to make for one epic night of Hip-Hop.

Here’s a couple of my all time favorite tracks by him, give them a listen and snag a ticket for tomorrow’s event right here.

MIAMI NOIZE 2012

Oh yes, it’s that time of year again. As we roll into March it is almost Time for the largest electronic music gathering event of the year, the WMC (Winter Music Conference). While it’s a bit early to get into details, OHR will be bringing you their own WMC guide shortly.

Until then, here’s a teaser of Miami Noize 2012, yes, a sexy compilation released by Boys Noize Records every year in time for the festivities. There are countless tracks on here that deserve praise, and there is even a little hidden gem for those who might be a little out of the loop with the label owner himself.

Pay close attention to ‘Elax’ as rumors have it Alex Ridha himself has a new side project and that on this track in particular he abandons his usual aggressive techno sound. Just as well, OHR favorite Felix Cartal does justice on a new collaboration with Bart B More.

Our House Records Compilation Volume 1

OHR001 Artwork

In a 3 track release so diverse it’s hard to sum the feelings up, but well…we’ll try. Realboy’s Fallout opens the compilation up with a haunting melody, chopped up synths, and foretelling vocal samples. NITEPPL step it up a notch in intensity with the heavy crunch of Me and You. Leading off a hard-hitting intro into a guitar wrought ballad of a breakdown this track helps leverage the two extremes brought from the other originals on the release. Track 3 – Vienna – maybe the danciest disco funk track we’ve heard in years. Dynamics bring their signature upbeat euphoria with this original that’s had our foot tapping since we first pressed play.

Enjoy a full stream of the 3 tracks below, or catch them on our Youtube page.
